If you really are not careful enough, you can get into small accidents while working inside the kitchen.  Accidents can easily happen to absentminded and careless people, but you should know that accidents are preventable.

Bottles, although they look harmless enough, can become a source of accident inside the kitchen.  For this reason, you should know how to properly handle bottles so as to avoid unnecessary accidents that could have been avoided in the first place had you been careful enough.

Bottles and Hazards

Although it may seem surprising, you should know that there are hazards associated with bottles.

For example you are opening a bottle and it slipped from your fingers.  The bottle could fall onto your feet and injure your toes.  If the bottle breaks, you could cut your skin when picking it up.  The bottle could also fall on top of an unsuspecting victim’s foot as well, resulting to an injury.

If a broken piece of bottle is left lying on the floor, someone might accidentally step or trip on it, resulting to an accident.  Another scenario that any restaurant would want to avoid is the presence of a broken glass in the diner’s dish brought about by improper disposal of broken bottles.  This could lead to revenue loss or, worse, a lawsuit, and one thing that a restaurant does not want is a negative publicity.

Handling and Opening Bottles

Here are some tips on how to properly open bottles:

  1. If you are going to open a bottle, hold the body tightly and twist the cap.  Never handle a bottle by its neck when opening a bottle.
  2. There are bottle openers, so use one if needed.

Serving Bottles

Now, when it comes to serving bottles, the most important thing that you should do is to make sure that you are not serving chipped bottles.  You should also make sure that there are no broken glasses.  Checking that the bottles are in excellent condition before serving them to the customers and diners is done so as to prevent accidents, and it is also done so as to avoid injuring yourself and the guests.

Proper Bottle Disposal

If the bottle is chipped, do not serve it to the customer.  Instead, dispose of it properly.  Now, there are proper bottle disposal guidelines.

The first thing that you have to do is to discard the contents of the chipped bottle.  There are proper bins for this, so it is recommended that you use them.  Next, place the chipped bottle into its appropriate bin.  There are also containers for broken glasses and bottles, so be sure to place them there.

If you are going to empty the garbage bin containing the broken glasses and bottles, be sure that it is not overloaded.  If it is too heavy, it is recommended that you ask for assistance in removing the garbage bag and disposing of it properly in the rubbish area.  Do not lift the whole heavy thing yourself to avoid accidents, lest the garbage bag tears.

Proper broken bottle and glass disposal should be taught to all new kitchen staff.  A good restaurant is an accident-free restaurant, and safety always starts with oneself.
