Running a restaurant is hard work, especially if you want to make it a success.  However, you should know that success is not just about having good products to sell and the target market to sell it to, but it is also about how you and your staff deal with the clients and how your staff deals with each other.  For this reason, the kitchen staff should be taught the right manners and conduct in the kitchen.

During Your Shift

A restaurant needs to have a very good flow in the kitchen to keep things running smoothly and to avoid any problems, so one of the most important things that the kitchen staff needs to understand is the importance of being on time for their shifts.  This way, kitchen duties will run smoothly, so always b e sure to clock in on time, as per your schedule.  However, if for some reason you would not be able to come for work, you need to tell your supervisor immediately.

During your shift, it is important that you are in your complete uniform at all times.  It is also important that remain in your station during your scheduled time, and if you are going on a break, be sure to advise your manager.  Any changes in your schedule should always have the approval of the manager.

Smoking is never allowed in the station, even if you are on your break.  Also, eating and drinking in the station are not allowed, and if ever it is allowed by the management, be sure to always keep the area clean and tidy.  If you are done, make sure that you clean up after yourself and never leave glasses or plates around.

Although your family or friends can call you up at your workplace, you should tell them that they can only call you when there is a real emergency.  Personal calls, after all, are not allowed at the restaurant, unless there is an emergency.

After Your Shift

If you are done with your duty, you should always remember that you are still carrying the name of your company, so always make sure that you maintain good behavior in and out of the kitchen.

Dealing with the Management and Coworkers

Of course, for a kitchen to run so smoothly, it is imperative that respect is given not only to your supervisors but to your coworkers as well.  A friendly smile and a positive attitude will go a long way.

Also, in a restaurant, teamwork is very important.  It is through teamwork that all things in the kitchen will run smoothly – from the start of the day to the end of the day.  If you have any problems regarding your duties, it is advisable that you approach your immediate supervisor and ask for clarifications.  The kitchen of a busy restaurant can be very chaotic that you are sure to see tempers fly, but you have to remember that you should always be very professional inside and outside the workplace.  Arguments can always be avoided through appropriate handling of the situation, and if a situation gets too heated, it is advisable that you seek the intervention of your manager.

Dealing with the Customers

The clients are the ones who can make or break a restaurant business, so for this reason, they should always be given importance.

Never, ever yell at or argue with a customer.  Instead, you should always keep your cool, however obnoxious a customer may seem, or you can always call the manager to help settle things, especially if a particular customer seems to be intoxicated.
